There is sometimes a worry that following tradition means losing authenticity. That you are not being yourself but performing what came before.
This is a misunderstanding. Tradition is not conformity. Tradition is a container. Within the container, you are entirely yourself. But the container has a shape. It has rules. It has form. Within that form, you find out who you actually are.
A musician playing jazz improvises, but he improviseswithin the structure of music that came before him. He learns the standards. He learns the form. And then, from within that knowledge, he makes something new that is entirely his own. The same is true in leather. You learn the tradition. You understand the protocols. And then you live them in a way that is specific to you and your Master.
This does not mean you must do exactly what was done in 1975. The world has changed. Technology is different. We have different safety information. Different understanding of psychology. You can be part of the tradition and also be contemporary.
But understand what you are doing. If you choose to forgo the ceremonial collaring, understand that you are choosing. You are not following tradition, and you are gaining something and losing something. If you create your own protocols, understand that you are not drawing on tested knowledge, and that you may have to learn hard lessons that other Masters have already learned.
There is nothing wrong with divergence. But diverge consciously. Know what you are keeping from tradition and what you are changing, and why.
